How Do Websites Make Money?
Since I have been making money online for almost four years now, a very common question that I get is ‘How do websites make money?’. There are actually a lot of different ways and I hope that I can shed some light on that for you. Here are the basic ways:
- Selling products and services. My best site makes over $30,000 per month, mostly from selling informational products that I have created to teach them different concepts. I get about 1500 people per day on the site and make great money by selling to them.
- Running advertising campaigns. If I were to run advertising on my site I could probably make quite a bit of money because I have solid traffic that’s valuable to other companies. Since most people that find my site are people who are trying to make money online, companies that teach that and sell tools could benefit from the traffic. I could sell banner spots or text links.
- Running Google-sponsored links. This allows them to take a revenue share from the profit Google makes. As long as you can drive traffic to your site you’ll do extremely well using this method.
- Consulting. With the current levels of traffic I have on one of my sites, it would be pretty dang easy to sell a lot of consulting. I did this once before last year when I needed some money and raised more than $25,000 in one weekend. It of course took me a few months to do the work but if you’re a person that has expertise you can sell it easily if you have the traffic.
I like to think of my websites like warehouses that thousands of people per day walk through. If you had a warehouse like that, there would be tons of way you could make money, right? You could sell hot dogs, clothes, or you could sell advertising spots on the walls and floor. The bottom line is that you would probably test different methods so that you could figure out how to produce the most profit with the foot traffic you have. Websites make money by following the same principle, generally. They test different methods for making money and stick with the ones that produce the most.
